Mark - Thanks for your thoughts on community. I just discovered your blog from a comment on one of my posts. I am looking forward to reading more of your thoughts. Let me know if you would like to get together for coffee some time.

One of the church's greatest challenges is doing this better than Starbucks does. Starbucks, when it is running well, cares about customers more than it should. That's we keep coming back and paying what we used to pay for a whole breakfast just to get some coffee.

Dave -- I think this desire for community is in all of us. I'm convinced it's a God thing and we're not meant to live in isolation.

Bart -- I think what holds us back sometimes is our own fear or insecurity. The great thing about real community is that those things are embraced along with everything else. Those are probably some of the things everyone else in the community feel as well.

Marc -- You put an interesting twist on the quote, wouldn't it be great to be part of a community so compelling that you could get beyond the lower levels of caring. That's what I long for!

In a way, a Christian community is a group of people who care about each other less than they should because the should is so high!

Still, hopefully they care more than the world thinks they should...
